Youth advocacy group backs YES to train applicants

A youth Advocacy group, Coalition for Accountable Leadership has affirmed Youth Enterprise Support (YES) quest to give training to some applicants of the presidential initiative. About 2084 Young entrepreneurs between the ages of 18-35 have applied for the 10 million seed fund.

The YES program was initiated by President John Dramani Mahama with a ten million Ghana cedis (GH¢10,000,000) seed fund to assist young Ghanaians with creative, innovative business ideas and plans to achieve their full potential. In order to have a good business proposal.

YES introduced the business clinic to help applicants to restructure the business plan to fit YES system of selection. Interest group, organized Agric workers union and The Alliance for Youth Entrepreneurs (AYE) have called on the YES team to released funds to applicants but in swift response, The coalition for accountable leadership said research conducted reveals that most applicants needs to be trained and is therefore affirming the YES position to train the applicants to ensure total success.  BELOW IS THE FULL STATEMENT RELEASED BY COFAL: WE AFFIRMS YES’ QUEST TO TRAIN APPLICANTS BEFORE RELEASING FUNDS TO THEM- COFAL SPEAKS THE VOICES OF THE TEAMING YOUTH OF GHANA

We would first of all like to extend our sincerest appreciation to His Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, for establishing the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) Program which is intended to enhance innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship among the youth.

The program would not only help to increase youth employment but would also help to strategically position the youth to contribute in the area of enterprise to the socio-economic growth and transformation of the economy.

The president’s introduction of this policy is a classical manifestation that he believes so much in the youth and is committed to the development of the youth as well as putting in place mechanisms for them to contribute their quota towards national development. A policy is successful when it is effectively implemented and the implementation process is monitored and evaluated so that issues arising from implementation are addressed.

The implementation of a policy must be effectively and efficiently executed so that the said policy achieves its intended goals. As such, there is no need to rush into the implementation of a policy.

In view of this, we humbly summit that the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) team should not rush into the release of funds to applicants but should undertake due diligence before the release of funds as it has been requested for my majority of your applicants across the nation As a youth group, we have been monitoring the activities of YES and we are impress with the CEO and her team, reports from the media and some applicants across the country is overwhelming. To ensure the realization of the purpose for which the policy was introduced.

We therefore supporting the YES CLINIC position and in fact the position of the applicants who identified the need for training after going through the business clinic This clarion call is informed by findings from the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) business clinics organized in seven (7) regions. About 90% of the applicants who attended the business clinics in the seven (7) regions acknowledged that training is of more priority than the funds.

Also, about 85% of applicants who have already established businesses accepted that their problems are not only about funds but proper accounts, book keeping and managerial skills.

These problems can be addressed through training and not by giving them only funds. Of what essence is it if we distribute funds to the applicants and they squander it? The issue is not about the early distribution of funds to applicants but positioning applicants (through training and funding) to successfully implement their business proposals.

At this stage I will advise all interested parties to spend few minutes at one of YES business clinic to appreciate the good work the team is doing.

As we pledge to support the YES team, we will not hesitate to point out shortfalls if the need be We therefore urge our support to the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) team and pray that it remain resolute in their stance to train applicants and not to rush into providing them with funds as the training would help enhance their success.
