Kumawu queen mother accused of bribing king makers
The
human rights court in Kumasi has deferred its judgment to 17th of
October in the Kumawu chieftaincy dispute. The Aduana Abusuapanin of Kumawu has
applied for an interlocutory injunction to restrict the Asantehene Otumfour
Osei Tutu II, the Asanteman council and five others from engaging in any
activity that could lead to the Installation of the Chief of Kumawu in the
Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region
Kwaku
Gyekyei and other chiefs of Kumawu say they will resist any attempt to enstool Dr.
Yaw Sarfo as the chief of Kumawu. The Kumawu stool has been vacant close for
nearly seven years after the death of Barima Asumadu Sakyi II. Few months ago,
attempts to enstool a chief under heavy security was fiercely resisted.
In a
latest twist to the case, Nana Kwaku Gyekyei and Opanin Kwabena Kodua have
filed for an interlocutory injunction to restrict Otumfour and others from installing
a new chief. The elders of Kumawu alleged that, the decision to install the chief against the will
of the people is because the queen
mother Nana Serwaa Amponsah paid some
monies to the king makers to select Dr. Yaw Sarfo as the Chief who according to
their tradition is the rightful person to the stool.
In court
the counsel for the accused tendered in court a tape purported to be a
conversation in which the queen mother of Kumawu admitted bribing king makers
but was rejected by the respondent. The
court however adjourned the case to the 17th of October to give its
verdict.
